The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School returns to Winnipeg

August 15, 2013

Beginning this fall, Congregation Shaarey Zedek will host The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School which will feature both beginner core courses and scholarly classes for previous Melton graduates. This acclaimed global network of learning communities provides an outlet for adults to study together and acquire a deeper knowledge of Judaism with courses designed for all levels of knowledge and practice. The pluralistic educational approach is non–denominational and draws upon scholarships from different Jewish movements, with the curriculum developed by scholars at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

“By providing this opportunity to our community we are looking to make Melton the cornerstone of Shaarey Zedek Adult Educational Programming for the future.” - Ian Staniloff, Executive Director

In addition to Shaarey Zedek’s Rabbi Alan Green and Chazzan Aníbal Mass, the Melton faculty will also include Rabbi Neal Rose and Dr. Ruth Ashrafi.

“This excellent opportunity for serious and engaging Jewish adult learning offers text-based lessons that help students to build a solid basis in major areas of Jewish learning such as religion, ritual, ethics, philosophy, literature, theology and contemporary Jewish life.” – Rabbi Alan Green

The classroom experience at the shul will be interactive and will encourage open discussion and multiple understandings, with a comprehensive body of knowledge. And best of all, there will be no tests, no homework, no grades and no prerequisites.

"I'm really excited to be invited once again to teach 'Rhythms' at the Melton school. Together we will be studying the Jewish Year, the Day-to-Day Jewish Living, Rabbinic Innovations, Rites of Passage, etc. I look forward to in depth discussions and learning with the new class." - Chazzan Aníbal Mass

Melton Adult Mini-School is for everyone:

  • parents and grandparent who want to stay ahead of their children and grandchildren as they learn about Judaism in school,
  • teachers who want to deepen their Jewish knowledge
  • board members from community organizations who would like to be more Jewishly literate
  • and individuals with questions about Judaism who are looking for diverse perspectives presented in a sophisticated, coherent way.
